Champions in Action in the U.S.
is fully operated by volunteers

Mentoring relationships increase interpersonal skills,
self-confidence, and the cognitive, spiritual
and emotional development of youth.

ROLANDO FONSECA GIVES ENDORSEMENT

Rolando Fonseca recently released a full endorsement of Champions in Action. Rolando, a professional soccer player in Guatemala, is the leading goal-scorer for Costa Rica’s national team and played a pivotal role in Costa Rica’s qualification for the 2002 World Cup. Below is Rolando’s endorsement letter.

Having lived in Central America for much of my career as a professional soccer athlete, I am constantly confronted with the problems and needs of Central American youth. This part of the world, and specifically Guatemala, has the highest homicide rates in the world. As a result, its youth are extremely vulnerable to the pressures of criminal organizations such as gangs and drug cartels. In my own experience working with at-risk youth, one common denominator among them is a lack of positive relationships. Champions in Action responds directly to this need by connecting youth to soccer-minded mentors. Through its connections with thousands of local churches in Guatemala, this organization promotes and facilitates mentoring relationships that center on Christ. The mission of Champions in Action - utilizing the influence of sports to create sustainable mentoring relationships - is one of the most powerful ideas I’ve encountered. I believe this model deserves the support of international donors, soccer teams, governments, and businesses to enable its vision to become a reality. I pledge my full support to Champions in Action and urge you to do the same. Should this great vision meet its goal of 50 soccer camps in Guatemala each year, the youth of this nation will never be the same.

Sincerely, Rolando Fonseca
